You’ve booked the venue, found the perfect dress and hired a great photographer. Things are starting to seem real and this fairy tale adventure is about to go into full swing. But hold on there Cinderella. Before your Fairy Godmother can just Bibbity Bobbity Boo you into princess status there are some things she has to consider.

 

Here are 5 questions you must ask potential  hair and makeup artists before you sign on the dotted line.

 

1. What certifications do they have?

A hairstylist should be licensed and a makeup artist should be certified through a reputable academy. This way, you know that they have been properly trained on technique,  sanitization, and safety relative to the service they provide.

 

2. Are they insured?

It is important that the hair stylist and/or makeup artist carry liability insurance in the event of injury or damage to property in any way. Some venues will require that you submit a copy of all vendor’s insurance. So be sure you obtain this prior to hiring a  hair stylist, makeup artist or hair and makeup company.

 

3. What is the policy in case of emergency?

Things come up. Emergencies happen. But what if something happens on your day and your hair and makeup artist(s) have to bail? There should be a contract agreement that not only protects the artist or agency from unforeseen circumstances, but also you. Like, what is the back-up plan? How do they expect to handle it if something does happen? What is the compensation to you? Just knowing that there is a plan for emergencies and that it is in writing, helps ensure all will still go as smoothly as possible for you if something does happen.

 

4. Do they offer a trial run option before you commit to hiring them?

Checking out different hair and makeup artists online or getting referrals is great, but until you see how they work with you, you just don’t know for sure that this is going to be a fit. If you commit to hiring an artist, sign an agreement, make the deposit and then feel unsatisfied with the trial, you then have the added hassle of either paying for another trial or trying to get out of the agreement altogether.

 

5. What is their background?

Does their aesthetic, style, personality match with your vision.”Meshing”  is important after all. So do a bit of research. Search Instagram hashtags by  #city+”wedding stylist” or similar terms and see what catches your eye.

And listen, go towards what feels right. The wedding day should be fun. All good feels. You want the right people around you who feel like your people.
